Unit 1 addresses the standards on atomic and molecular structure. As an introduction to this unit you will be exploring the elements on the periodic table using the link on the right called Web Elements.
Your assignment is to use Web Elements to look for patterns in the periodic table and to begin to identify the major groups of elements. You will complete and submit the following questions:
1. Look at the element hydrogen on the periodic table. What information can be obtained about this element just by its location on the periodic table?
2. What patterns do you see in atomic number and atomic mass?
3. Where are most of the gases found on the periodic table?
4. What type of elements are most common, metals or nonmetals?
5. Identify and describe the location of the following groups on the periodic table: Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, halogens and noble gases.
6. For each of the groups in question 5 describe three characteristics that the elements in that group have in common. To help you get started with this question view the following video on alkali metals.
